SUWANEE Barbara Secory Barbara Joan Secory, 70, of Suwanee, GA passed away Sunday, December 29, 2013 at her home. As per her wishes, she was cremated. Barb was born in Philadelphia, PA on August 11, 1943 to her parents Floryan and Angeline (Pelos) Florek. Although she endured a harsh childhood and grew up poor, she was determined to make a better life for herself. After graduating from Monrovia H.S. in California, she attended Junior College for a year. In her early twenties she married her 1st husband Rick, and they had a daughter Kathleen Mangold. Ten years later she divorced. In 1979 she began working at Hughes Aircraft Co. Over the years her dedication and exceptional work ethics moved her to the top of her profession as administrative assistant to satellite project managers. In 1982 she met her husband Ron Secory. They connected immediately with similar interest in antiques, music and travel. They were married on May 12, 1984 in Carmel, CA. That was one of their favorite travel places which they visited almost yearly. They recommitted their marriage vows on a Carmel cliff overlooking the ocean on their 10th anniversary. Barb retired from Hughes after 20 years and she and Ron lived in Hawthorne, CA until 2002 when they moved to Suwanee, GA. Her interests included monthly social gatherings with a close group of friends, dancing, travel, baby-sitting grandchildren, and working word puzzles. She volunteered at Gwinnett Medical Center until her own health conditions worsened. She had also volunteered every week to take a close friend who was stricken with cancer to chemotherapy. She enjoyed chatting with friends and loved seeing her grandchildren. Barb was always kind to everyone she knew and had a soft spot in her heart for young children and puppies. In Jan 2013, Barb struggled with her health after a negative reaction to medications. That summer she was stricken with lung cancer which was found during a routine chest x-ray. In Sept, she was diagnosed with ALS. She was strong and brave as she tried to combat her illnesses, but her diseases rapidly took control. She never complained. Barb passed away peacefully in her home with her loving husband by her side. Ron will deeply miss his partner and companion in life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Floyd. She is survived by her husband Ron; daughter Kathy (Jimmy) Norton; granddaughter Lauren; grandsons Brenton and Landon, and several step-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and long-time friends. Barb will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will rest in peace at Eternal Hills Cemetery in Snellville, GA.
