STAR students honored at luncheon

DULUTH -- At the 1818 Club on Thursday, it seemed everybody was a STAR.

An honor bestowed on high school students with the highest SAT score at their school, young people from all over Gwinnett County were in attendance to represent more than two dozen learning facilities.

In its 53rd year, the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors students with the highest marks as well as teachers chosen by each elite student.

Gale Hey, deputy superintendent of teaching and learning with Gwinnett County Public Schools, spoke to all in attendance during the gathering.

"We are very proud of our STAR students and teachers. They are indeed stars, representing the best and brightest in our schools," Hey said. "Academically, these students have excelled in our schools and are prepared for the future. Part of that participation was provided by the stellar teachers we also recognize today."

Gwinnett Chamber Representative Jann Moore thanked the students and teachers for their efforts and success. She added that the "tie between businesses and education is inseparable."

STAR students Michael Song of Brookwood High and Andrew Alin of Norcross shared the honor of district-level winners. Both will go on to a regional event March 23 in Forsyth County.
